The period from August to October causes an increase in itching complaints in many horses. Just when you think they are starting to subside, they peak again!
There are several reasons for this:
Midges and other biting insects are currently having a field day: the rain combined with warm temperatures provides more opportunities for reproduction (ditch banks, water troughs, stagnant water, etc.).
Midges intuitively choose the most interesting horse to bite. These are usually horses with reduced resistance and accumulated waste products, e.g. under the mane, as in sweet itch. The immune system is therefore severely tested.
Intestinal health also plays an extremely important role in this. Sugar- and starch-rich food and overloading of the organs can cause waste products to accumulate that have difficulty leaving the body. This manifests itself in itching and flaking, among other things.
The body will try to deal with this itself, but often fails to do so sufficiently. During this period, we also see many horses suffering from obesity, which causes inflammatory reactions in the body.
In addition, your horse's liver energy is gradually reaching its lowest point and a lot of energy is also going into producing the winter coat.
So make sure you provide a balanced diet, tailored to your horse, and good management to control the symptoms and maintain resistance. Despite all our best efforts, less is more when it comes to horses prone to itching. Opt for moderation.
Controlling itching is therefore a multifactorial issue.
Our range of 100% natural care products is fully in line with this.
